Lens certification rules verify that paintball mask lenses provide adequate structural protection against direct impact. Compliant lenses must meet standards such as ASTM F1776 or similar ratings for projectile resistance. These tests assess the lens material, structural bonding, and ability to withstand repeated impacts.
Thermal lenses, which use a dual-pane design, help reduce fogging and improve visibility. However, the foam seal between panes must remain intact to prevent moisture intrusion. If separation or warping occurs, the lens must be replaced.
Single-pane lenses may be used in some formats but are more susceptible to fogging and stress cracking. Officials inspect these lenses more frequently due to their lower resistance to thermal expansion.
Any lens showing signs of warping, internal separation, excessive scratching, chemical damage, or weakened bonding must be removed from play. Replacement is mandatory, regardless of the mask’s age or manufacturer.
These certification rules ensure consistent player visibility and adequate eye protection.
